William Matthew Hallman, 30 of Watercove Drive in Freeport was arrested early Tuesday morning on an open count of murder.

The charges stem from an incident over the weekend where the Walton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call regarding a shooting on Piney Point Road.

When deputies arrived, they found one man dead with a single gunshot wound to the chest.

During the investigation, interviews were conducted with all parties involved including witnesses, and re-enactments were done at the scene.

It was found that the victim was invited into the home and – contrary to initial statements – was not armed at the time of the shooting. It was also discovered that earlier that evening Hallman made statements about shooting the victim.

“Although there wasn’t an arrest immediately, it’s important not to be in a hurry during an investigation of this nature,” said Sheriff Michael Adkinson. “Thoroughness is paramount to lead to successful arrest and prosecution.”

Hallman is being held on no bond after first appearance Tuesday morning.

Walton County Sheriff’s Office would like to express our appreciation to the Office of the State Attorney, First Judicial Circuit, for their assistance in the investigation.
