Dangerous Dogs

Vicious, dangerous dogs are a threat to the safety and welfare of the people of Walton County. Because of this, it is imperative that we keep the public aware of the general locations and requirements for dangerous dogs in our county.

DANGEROUS DOG REGISTRATION PROCESS:

Once a dog has been deemed dangerous by an animal control officer, the owner of the dog will receive a notice of a dangerous dog that they have to sign acknowledging they have seven business days from receipt of the letter to appeal the dangerous dog determination. If the owner does not appeal the determination, he or she has fourteen days from the receipt of the determination letter to comply with the requirements of Florida State Statute 767.12.

If the owner decides to comply with Florida State Statute 767.12, an animal control officer will inspect the area in which the dog owner is proposing to contain the animal to ensure the owner has met the requirements of the statute before the dog is released by the Walton County Animal Shelter.

REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTERED DANGEROUS DOGS:

  • A current certificate of rabies vaccination for the dog
  • A proper enclosure to confine the dog and visible warning signs at all entry points on the premises that inform the public of the presence of a “Dangerous Dog” on the property.
  • The dog shall be permanently identifiable by an ear or inner thigh tattoo or microchip.

Animal control officers perform monthly compliance checks with all registered dangerous dogs in Walton County.
