A DeFuniak Springs man is behind bars after a woman awoke to find him standing at the foot of her bed making noises early Tuesday morning.

Just before 5:30 AM on August 26, Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call reporting an intruder inside a home on Andrews Road in the Liberty community. The homeowner told deputies she woke up to find a man in her bedroom, mumbling and appearing disoriented. When she yelled at him, the man walked out the back door. She then watched as he wandered around her property before disappearing from view.

The homeowner later discovered the intruder had left behind articles of his clothing inside her home. She also noticed some of her prepackaged snacks had been eaten, and an empty container was found outside. While checking her vehicle to ensure nothing was missing, she found the suspect asleep in the back seat of her car, parked under her carport.

Deputies approached the vehicle and identified the man as 40-year-old Elijah Earl Spencer of DeFuniak Springs. After refusing multiple commands to exit, Spencer was removed from the car by deputies and placed under arrest.

Spencer is charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, criminal mischief, and resisting an officer without violence. He was issued a $5,000 bond and remains in custody at the Walton County Jail at the time of this release.
