WALTON COUNTY, FL – Firefighters from multiple agencies teamed up to knock down two structure fires that broke out just after midnight.

At 12:07 a.m., Walton County Fire Rescue (WCFR) responded to a report of a shed containing the restaurant’s smoker on fire behind H & M Hot Dogs in DeFuniak Springs. WCFR arrived within minutes and assisted the DeFuniak Springs Fire Department in containing the fire, preventing it from spreading to the nearby main building.

Approximately forty-five minutes later, Walton County Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to a residential fire on County Highway 280 E in Argyle Volunteer Fire Department’s district. WCFR arrived on scene within eight minutes to find heavy smoke coming from an upstairs apartment in a large barn. Firefighters worked for nearly 90 minutes to bring the blaze under control. Fortunately, the resident of the apartment made it out safely and no animals in the barn were injured.

“This demonstrates the power of teamwork,” says Fire Chief Austin Pugh. “Thanks to the cooperation of all agencies involved, we were able to prevent these fires from escalating.”

The fire in the barn is suspected to have been caused by an electrical issue with the apartment’s air conditioning unit.
