How to Obtain a Burn Permit in Walton County
If you plan to conduct a prescribed burn or debris burn on your property in Walton County, Florida law requires you to obtain authorization through the Florida Forest Service. Follow the steps below to ensure your burn is permitted and compliant with state regulations.
Step 1: Set Up a Customer Account
Contact your local Florida Forest Service office to create an account. The recommended time to call is between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
Inform the Duty Officer that you are a new customer and would like to obtain a customer number.
Step 2: Provide Required Information
Be prepared to provide the following information:
- Full Name
- Mailing Address
- Telephone Number
Step 3: Receive Your Customer Number
The Duty Officer will issue you a customer number. Please record this number and store it in a safe place for future use.
Step 4: Request Authorization on the Day of Your Burn
On the day you plan to burn, call the Florida Forest Service office again to request a burn authorization. You will need to provide:
- Your customer number
- The location of your burn (section, township, and range or latitude/longitude)
The Duty Officer will plot your burn on a map and generate a smoke dispersion forecast to assess any potential hazards.
Step 5: On-Site Inspection (If Required)
For first-time burns, a Florida Forest Service field unit may conduct an on-site inspection to ensure proper procedures are followed and safety measures are in place.
