BON APPÉTIT! FIRST FEMALE CLASS GRADUATES INTRO TO CULINARY ARTS AT WALTON COUNTY JAIL

April 19, 2023

WALTON COUNTY, Fla— There’s an old saying that goes something like this, “Food is good for the soul.”

At Walton County Sheriff’s Office, we couldn’t agree more. But, while eating food is certainly one thing, learning to make it yourself is the cherry on top.

For the first time, a group of women incarcerated at the Walton County Jail have completed Northwest Florida State College’s Intro to Culinary Services. The course acts as an apprenticeship program approved by the Department of Labor in the State of Florida providing graduates with real opportunities upon their release.

The Walton County Jail partnered with Northwest Florida to provide the four-week long course taught by Walton County Sheriff’s Office Food Service Manager Mr. John Lyons, three days a week. The class covers food safety, basic knife skills, and cooking techniques such as steaming, roasting, frying, blackening, and braising.

So, what’s on the menu?

The ladies make a variety of meals such as Philly cheesesteak sandwiches with seasoned fries, blackened chicken breast served alongside cilantro lime rice, and seared mahi-mahi paired with linguine and lemon tomato sauce.

On the day they completed the course, the ladies cooked up Italian chicken cutlets, linguini with spinach cream sauce, and steamed vegetables as a taste test. Our jail staff (and maybe the person writing this post) were happy to oblige.

Felicimo!
