Pet-Friendly Shelter

In a hurricane, pets are subjected to the same hazards as people. In the event of a major hurricane, evacuating to a friend or family member’s home or a pet-friendly hotel outside of the evacuation zone is the best option. However, if that is not possible, take your cat or dog to a pet-friendly shelter. Pet-friendly shelters will be open for every storm, but locations may vary. PLEASE NOTE: Only dogs and cats are allowed at pet-friendly emergency shelters.

Walton County Animal Services manages a pet-friendly shelter during every hurricane. Pet-friendly shelters are first-come, first served but no pre-registration is required. You must stay at the shelter with your pet at all times, meaning you cannot drop your pet off at the emergency shelter and leave. Pet owners are responsible for feeding and cleaning up after their pets while staying at the emergency shelter.

Items that you will need to bring to your local pet-friendly shelter include, water, non-perishable food, any medications your pet may need, and clean-up supplies for your dog or cat. You will also need a crate or carrier large enough to hold a litter box and food and water bowls, a collar with a tag displaying the pet’s name and an emergency contact number, as well as a leash. Having a recent photo of your pet is also helpful incase you get separated from your pet during the storm.
