WCSO RAMPS UP SCHOOL ZONE ENFORCEMENT AS STUDENTS HEAD BACK TO SCHOOL
Annual Operation Blue Bird begins on Tuesday, August 11, to help keep students safe.
As thousands of Walton County students prepare to return to the classroom on Tuesday, August 11, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office is once again implementing its annual Operation Blue Bird initiative, increasing enforcement in school zones and along school bus routes to help ensure students have a safe start to the 2026-2027 school year.
Running through the end of the month, Operation Blue Bird is designed to create a safer environment for students, parents, school employees, and motorists during the busiest weeks of the school year. Deputies will focus enforcement efforts during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal, targeting dangerous driving behaviors such as speeding in school zones, distracted driving, passing stopped school buses, illegally passing vehicles on the shoulder, and seat belt and child restraint violations.
Motorists should expect to see an increased law enforcement presence around schools and along bus routes during peak travel times.
“The start of the new school year is an exciting time for students and families, and we want parents to know we’re doing everything we can to help make it a safe one,” says Sheriff Michael Adkinson. “Operation Blue Bird is about protecting our children and encouraging drivers to slow down, stay focused, and remember that a few extra seconds of patience can save a life.”
The first weeks of school bring heavier traffic, more children walking and riding bicycles, and buses making frequent stops throughout the county. Drivers are encouraged to leave a little earlier, eliminate distractions behind the wheel, obey school zone speed limits, remain alert for crossing guards and students traveling to and from school, and always stop for school buses when required by law.
While Operation Blue Bird includes increased law enforcement, its purpose is prevention. By maintaining a visible presence in school zones and along bus routes, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office aims to reduce crashes, improve compliance with traffic laws, and provide families with peace of mind as students begin the new school year.
