POSITION TITLE: Fleet Maintenance – Mechanic

ANNUAL SALARY RANGE:   $30,000.00 – $50,400.00

 

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office is actively seeking qualified applicants for the position of Fleet Maintenance – Mechanic.

 

General Statement of Job:

 

The duties of this position require a person to provide skilled maintenance and repair of motorized vehicles and equipment. Work responsibilities include performing field repairs and repairing and maintaining Sheriff’s Office vehicles and equipment. Must assist all divisions of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • High School Diploma, Florida General Education Development Test (GED), or out-of-state GED, with transcript of test results.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Must be able to operate computer, copier and telephone.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience as an auto technician.

 

Essential Job Functions:

 

  • Performs minor and major repairs and maintenance of vehicles and equipment;
  • Performs periodic maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including lubrication, oil and air filter changes, and other related activities to comply with manufacturer’s maintenance schedules;
  • Diagnoses and repairs vehicles or equipment that are malfunctioning in unusual or unique ways;
  • Requires regular and predictable attendance;
  • Must be able to cooperatively work with coworkers and general public;
  • Must be able to maintain a constant state of awareness and act in a safe manner;
  • Must have the ability to follow directives and policies of the agency;
  • Performs related duties as necessary.

 

Standards to Perform Job Functions:

 

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of hand-held and electrical equipment and tools. Must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a small amount of force constantly to lift, carry push or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work. Must be able to perform manual tasks and remain on feet for extended periods of time. May be subject to a significant degree of danger or risk due to the use of chemicals/toxic agents in performing essential functions. Must be able to work under sustained periods of exposure to the outside elements.

 

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or components (whether similar to or different from obvious standards) of the facility and applicable components (i.e., equipment, doors, surfaces, cleaning materials and supplies).

 

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information; includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors. Requires the ability to tactfully and effectively interact with the public and with co-workers.

 

Language Ability: Must be able to read and comprehend basic English, rendered in formats such as cleaning agent instructions, warning labels, equipment operation directions and other materials related to the job. Must be able to communicate effectively in Standard English and to convey information to others.

 

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes accurately in using hand held and electrically powered equipment and machinery.

 

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items including control knobs, switches, power tools, hand tools, etc. Must have high levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

 

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress when confronted with an emergency or tight deadline. Avoids violent behavior and any other type of behavior that could threaten the safety of other employees or the public.

 

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to hear and understand communications through telephone and radio.

 

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics of records, fleet services, vehicles and equipment, specifications and contracts.

 

Language Ability: Requires ability to read a variety of records, reports, policy and procedure manuals, codes, professional journals, etc., in moderately complex technical terminology. Requires the ability to read and interpret warranties, contracts and specifications. Requires the ability to prepare forms and reports using prescribed formats, and adhering to all rules of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Requires the ability to communicate effectively in Standard English.

 

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret a variety of technical instructions in written, mathematical or diagrammatic form; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Requires the application of principles of influence systems and synthesis functions.

 

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to issue and follow verbal and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical and/or professional languages used within the parameters of the job.

 

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, multiply and divide, use decimals and calculate percentages, to compute discount and loss, ratio and proportion.

 

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.

 

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with frequent deadlines. Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy in frequent contact with various professionals, Sheriff’s Office staff, and the general public.

 

Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and hear: Must be able to hear and understand communications through telephone and radio.
