Walton County Sheriff’s Office Jail Operations Bureau is actively recruiting for the positon of Certified and Non-Certified Detention Deputy. This is an open and continuous EXTERNAL advertisement.
Brief Position Description
Detention Deputies are often referred to as Correctional Officers. At Walton County Sheriff’s Office, these sworn members work directly with inmates to maintain order and provide for the security, care and direct supervision of inmates in housing units, at meals, during recreation, on work assignments and during all other phases of activity in a correctional facility. WCSO Jail requires staffing on a 24/7 basis which requires employees to work shift work; working weekends and holidays is often required. At WCSO, Detention Deputies work 12-hour shifts in secure areas, allowing them to be off every-other weekend. Shift assignments are based on the needs of the agency. Certified applicants must have completed the Basic Recruit Training Course for Correctional Officers and possess a current employment certificate of compliance for Correctional Officer issued by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. Certified applicants who are selected for employment will be hired at a minimum rate of $33,588 per year. Following the successful completion of a 1 year probationary period, the salary will increase to $34,588. Detention Deputies are sworn members who are eligible for high risk retirement benefits as well as education incentive payments.
Non-Certified applicants are those who do not possess Florida Correctional Officer Certification. Successful non-certified applicants will be hired on Temporary Employment Authorization (TEA) status, during which time employees will attend corrections academy on a full-time basis and WCSO will pay for the fees associated with obtaining the required certification while also paying salary and benefits. Such applicants will be required to sign a willingness agreement to commit to a minimum of two (2) years as a certified detention deputy. After successfully obtaining the corrections certification, the salary for these positions will increase to $33,588. Following the successful completion of a 1 year probationary period, the salary will increase to $34,588. Detention Deputies are sworn members who are eligible for high risk retirement benefits as well as education incentive payments.
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must possess the following qualifications:
- Be at least 19 years of age
- Be a United States Citizen
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
- Possess a valid FL driver’s license with a good driving history
- Have a good moral character and be drug free, in accordance with agency policy
- Pass a background investigation which includes all items described on the agency’s automatic disqualification list, such as no felony convictions, no misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement, no convictions or injunctions for domestic violence, no dishonorable discharge from any branch of the of the United States Armed Forces, etc.
- Non-Certified applicants must be eligible for hire on Temporary Employment Authorization (TEA) status
- Certified applicants must have completed the Basic Recruit Training Course for Correctional Officers and possess a current employment certificate of compliance for Correctional Officer issued by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.

Applicants selected to compete in the process will be required to successfully complete the following:
- Physical Abilities Test (PAT)
- CritiCall Test
- Polygraph Examination
Applicants who have already completed the CritiCall Test and/or Polygraph Examination may be waived from these requirements. Applicants who are selected to fill the positons will be required to complete an FDLE physical, drug screen and psychological evaluation.
