    Due to yesterday’s lightning strike, the jail’s inmate phone system and video visitation is currently down.  The water supply was also down for several hours but has been fixed. We are working quickly to resolve the issues and appreciate the public’s patience during this outage.  ...

  • Walton County Sheriff’s Office to Host Citizen Law Enforcement Academy

      The Walton County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce its next Citizen Law Enforcement Academy, which will begin on October 9, 2014.  For citizens who want a truly eye opening experience about law enforcement, this is where it all starts.  Participants will spend about three hours in a class room once a week for approximately 10 weeks.  The Citizen Law Enforcement Academy is a great program for any citizen who wishes to learn more about the field of law enforcement and the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.   • WCSO Arrests Individual for Soliciting a 14 Year Old Girl

      Garrett Scott Teal, 21, of 2609 Palamino Trail, Crestview, was arrested on Saturday, September 6th.  Teal is charged with “obscene communication use computer to seduce lure child.”  An undercover investigation began in May 2014, using a smartphone application to target individuals soliciting minors to engage in sexual activity.  On May 6, the investigator posted “Bored young female…J.”  On the same day, Teal replied to the post by sending a private message.  During the course of the conversation, it was made known to Teal that he was communicating with a 14 year old girl.  Teal knowingly solicited the minor to engage in sexual activity.    Teal has been ordered by Judge David Green to have no contact with minors.    ...

  • Accreditation Team Invites Public Comments about the Walton County Sheriff’s Office

      A team of assessors from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) will arrive October 20, 2014, to examine all aspects of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures, management, operations, and support service.  The Walton County Sheriff’s Office has to comply with approximately 260 standards in order to receive accredited status.  Many of the standards are critical to life, health and safety issues.     As part of the on-site assessment, agency members and the general public are invited to offer comments to the assessment team.  A copy of the standards is available through Walton County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer, Catherine Rodriguez at [email protected]        F ...

  • WCSO Makes Arrest in Toddler Drowning

      The mother of three year old Karson Howell, who drowned in the family pool September 3rd, was arrested early this evening.  Stephanie Ann Howell, 22, was arrested without incident at 8212 Hwy 331 North, DeFuniak Springs, by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.  Howell is charged with child neglect.   Howell is booked at the Walton County Jail and will see the judge tomorrow morning where bond will be set.      More information will be released as it becomes available.   ...

  • Suspect Charges Upgraded to Sexual Battery

    On Sept 5, 2014 Deputies with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in Freeport, Florida in reference to a complainant’s grandson molesting her 5yoa cousin. Prior to the deputies’ arrival, the suspect fled the scene on foot. A short while later, the suspect, Vincent Edward Barrett, 21yoa, of North Jackson in Freeport, Florida was located and taken into custody. Vincent was taken to the Sheriff’s office where an interview was conducted by investigators. Vincent was originally charged for Lewd and Lascivious molestation on a child under 12 and taken to the Walton County Jail.  Upon further investigation, Vincent is now being charged with Sexual Battery on a child under 12.   ...

Aviation Unit

Aviation-01The Aviation Unit consists of one (1) pilot and one (1) tactical flight officer. These deputies spend countless hours training both day and night to help keep the citizens and visitors of Walton County safe. Utilizing an upgraded Army OH-58 helicopter, the unit missions include: aerial support, reconnaissance, search and rescue, fugitive apprehension, domestic marijuana eradication and disaster/emergency management assessments.

The helicopter is currently outfitted with the latest in thermal imaging technology, GPS, and moving map systems. Equipped with a forward looking infra-red (FLIR) system, the aircraft is able to detect the slightest heat signatures while conducting aerial searches from higher, safer altitudes. The aircraft is furnished with a 15-inch touch screen flat panel monitor, a six-inch flat panel monitor, night sun spotlight, Avelex moving map system, and Garmin GPS system, allowing the pilot and tactical flight officer to safely complete missions.

The Aviation Unit is not a full-time active unit and is on a call-out only basis. These deputies are assigned to other specialty units within the Walton County Sheriff's Office. It is because of their commitment, dedication, and diligence that make the Aviation Unit an essential and integral part of this agency and to the citizens of Walton County.

Aviation-02The Aviation Unit flew over 47 mission hours in 2013 to include fugitive apprehension, training exercises, domestic marijuana eradication, and other calls for service.
