    Due to yesterday’s lightning strike, the jail’s inmate phone system and video visitation is currently down.  The water supply was also down for several hours but has been fixed. We are working quickly to resolve the issues and appreciate the public’s patience during this outage.  ...

  • Walton County Sheriff’s Office to Host Citizen Law Enforcement Academy

      The Walton County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce its next Citizen Law Enforcement Academy, which will begin on October 9, 2014.  For citizens who want a truly eye opening experience about law enforcement, this is where it all starts.  Participants will spend about three hours in a class room once a week for approximately 10 weeks.  The Citizen Law Enforcement Academy is a great program for any citizen who wishes to learn more about the field of law enforcement and the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.   • WCSO Arrests Individual for Soliciting a 14 Year Old Girl

      Garrett Scott Teal, 21, of 2609 Palamino Trail, Crestview, was arrested on Saturday, September 6th.  Teal is charged with “obscene communication use computer to seduce lure child.”  An undercover investigation began in May 2014, using a smartphone application to target individuals soliciting minors to engage in sexual activity.  On May 6, the investigator posted “Bored young female…J.”  On the same day, Teal replied to the post by sending a private message.  During the course of the conversation, it was made known to Teal that he was communicating with a 14 year old girl.  Teal knowingly solicited the minor to engage in sexual activity.    Teal has been ordered by Judge David Green to have no contact with minors.    ...

  • Accreditation Team Invites Public Comments about the Walton County Sheriff’s Office

      A team of assessors from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) will arrive October 20, 2014, to examine all aspects of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures, management, operations, and support service.  The Walton County Sheriff’s Office has to comply with approximately 260 standards in order to receive accredited status.  Many of the standards are critical to life, health and safety issues.     As part of the on-site assessment, agency members and the general public are invited to offer comments to the assessment team.  A copy of the standards is available through Walton County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer, Catherine Rodriguez at [email protected]        F ...

  • WCSO Makes Arrest in Toddler Drowning

      The mother of three year old Karson Howell, who drowned in the family pool September 3rd, was arrested early this evening.  Stephanie Ann Howell, 22, was arrested without incident at 8212 Hwy 331 North, DeFuniak Springs, by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.  Howell is charged with child neglect.   Howell is booked at the Walton County Jail and will see the judge tomorrow morning where bond will be set.      More information will be released as it becomes available.   ...

  • Suspect Charges Upgraded to Sexual Battery

    On Sept 5, 2014 Deputies with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in Freeport, Florida in reference to a complainant’s grandson molesting her 5yoa cousin. Prior to the deputies’ arrival, the suspect fled the scene on foot. A short while later, the suspect, Vincent Edward Barrett, 21yoa, of North Jackson in Freeport, Florida was located and taken into custody. Vincent was taken to the Sheriff’s office where an interview was conducted by investigators. Vincent was originally charged for Lewd and Lascivious molestation on a child under 12 and taken to the Walton County Jail.  Upon further investigation, Vincent is now being charged with Sexual Battery on a child under 12.   ...

Canine Unit

k9-2The Canine (K-9) Unit consists of four highly trained teams that assist in the apprehension of suspects and the seizure of illegal drugs including, marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine. Members of this unit train weekly on their skills along with their assigned canine to maintain a successful canine team. All canine teams are trained and certified annually to conform to United States Police Canine Association regulation and to the National Narcotic Detection Dog Association. Sergeant Nick Bearden maintains certification as a canine instructor and continues providing internal training for the canine teams.

Each team is a specialized unit who performs a wide array of search and enforcement functions.

In 2013, the Canine Unit conducted approximately 1,540 traffic stops. During these stops, the Canine Unit deployed their canines approximately 277 times resulting in 118 narcotic finds. The Canine Unit was also deployed onto 25 tracks with 13 subjects being located. This ranged from cases involving suspects in crimes to missing children. There have been 110 arrests made by the unit and members of this team have assisted in helping patrol and other agencies make arrests as well.

During this year, there have been several big cases the unit has worked, resulting in charges of trafficking in narcotics to methamphetamine labs. Several of these cases are still under investigation by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
