H.D. Alford is a life-long resident of Walton County. He began his career in law enforcement with the Walton County Sheriff's Office in 1977 where he worked for approximately one year before joining the Florida Department of Corrections (DOC). Alford served at nine different facilities during his career with the DOC. He spent the final 10 years as a warden where he supervised more than 700 staff members.

Alford served 27 years with the DOC and retired in 2003. In 2009, he was recruited by Sheriff Adkinson as Chief of Administration where he was responsible for supervising Human Resources, Records, Purchasing, Fleet Maintenance, and Information Technology. Director Alford now oversees 911, communications, information technology, animal shelter, fleet and property management, records, purchasing,  citizen volunteers and reception.

Alford is a graduate of Walton Sr. High School, Corrections Training Academy and numerous training classes including the certified public manager's course through Florida State University.
